~ The Old Man and the Sea
My Grandfather would sit for hours looking at the ocean – from our deck, from the dune or, when it was raining, from the porch. This past weekend, I saw this man standing at the water’s edge, looking out over the break, and it sparked a such a strong memory – a good memory.
Just over the dune and across the street is another one of my Grandfather’s favorite spots:
Although no one would be awake early enough to truly know what time it was, I would have to guess it was about 4:30 in the morning when he would make his daily trek to the end of the island. He would have his first breakfast at Mustache Bill’s and then check out the fishing boats before returning to the house for his next breakfast with all of us. Every day.
It’s a comforting memory that accompanies the salt air and breezes of one of my favorite places. Perhaps next time on the island, I will have to enjoy an early morning breakfast before catching the boats leaving the inlet.
Enjoy your evening!
